This year’s Asia Cup is going to be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Although it will be held in the UAE, it will be hosted by Sri Lanka. Keeping in view the World Cup, this game will be in the T20I format.
Although Bangladesh is not very comfortable with this format, team director Khaled Mahmud Sujon told the media in Mirpur that “the team is preparing with the hope of the final”.
In 2016 and 2018, Bangladesh played the final in two consecutive tournaments and lost to India both times. This time, the team-Shakib will enter the field with the aim of the final.
Khaled Mahmud said with confidence, “I believe, we can do well there. Before this, Bangladesh played the final of the Asia Cup. Whether the format is 50 overs or T20I, we definitely want to play the final. We want to compete, play good cricket.”
Sri Lanka and Afghanistan are opponents of Bangladesh in the first round of this tournament. Bangladesh will have to top them in the group stage and go to the Super Four. The top two teams on the points list will play the final.
The task is difficult for Bangladesh, however, not impossible at all. Bangladesh have the experience of defeating Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka in T20Is.
“Of course, we want to play that (fearless) type of cricket. I am not saying that we, Bangladesh, will suddenly change and become Asia Cup champions. But we want to take that path to how we can do well in this format. In a 120-ball game, you have very little time to make that decision – that we can do in ODIs,” Sujon said.
However, Sujon is happy to have Shakib Al Hasan as captain. Bangladesh’s most experienced cricketer in T20 is aggressive as a captain. Sujon thinks that this will help the team.
