Shakib Al Hasan told a joint news conference before the tour of South Africa that the BCB would now decide in which series he would be rested. From that point of view, Shakib should not be asked for leave from the ODI series against West Indies. However, before the tour, he asked for a leave.

The Test captain has asked for a rest as the three-match ODI series against the Caribbean is not a World Cup Super League match.

BCB president Nazmul Hasan Papon said on Wednesday that he had verbally informed cricket management chairman Jalal Yunus that Shakib would not play in the ODI series.

Even then he was kept in the ODI team to avoid controversy. When the T20 series is over, the board will announce — “Shakib has been given a rest”.

On Shakib’s leave issue, Papon said, “I heard it, he (Shakib) told Jalal Yunus that he can’t play ODI series. However, Shakib hasn’t talked about it with the board yet. If I talk to him now and then, I will understand. However, you can say this is official (verbally informing Jalal Yunus).”

Many countries give rest to senior cricketers. Shakib has been talking about this rotation system for five years now. BCB is also implementing it slowly.

About giving rests to the seniors, the board president said, “It is better to give senior cricketers a leave on those series which are not part of the rankings. In this way, we also get the opportunity to give chances to new boys. First, you need to know if there are players in their place? We think they need a break. I am thinking about how to give.”

The board wants to give the seniors a rest on the tour of Zimbabwe to see the alternate players before the T20I World Cup. This message has also been given to the seniors from the cricket management department.

Shakib welcomed the strategy of the board. He thinks that in the interest of the country’s cricket, it is better to give the opportunity to the youngsters to play with the seniors resting from time to time. Thus, there will be no vacancy after the retirement of seniors.
