Australia beat Peru, 20 steps ahead of than Aussies in the FIFA rankings, 5-4 in a tiebreaker, qualifying for Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup as the 31st team.

Australia coach Graham Arnold replaced regular goalkeeper Mathew Ryan with substitute goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne in the very last minute of extra time due to a goalless draw.

Goalkeeper Redmayne danced in front of the goalpost before the kick to distract the Peruvian players before each shot.

His “tactics” did not work out Peru’s first five kicks, with Luis Advincula failing to aim for a third shot for the Latin American side, but that was largely due to Redmayne’s credit. But in the end, Alex Valera, who came to take the sixth kick from Peru, seemed to be incensed by Redmayne’s dance. Andrew Redmayne took the country to the World Cup for the sixth time by blocking his shot.

Australia played against Peru only once before. Four decades after defeating Australia in that match at the 2018 World Cup, Peru saw the face of victory in the World Cup. Even before this match, the Latin American country was the favorite. Their camp was relatively more confident. However, Australia, who are in great form, said before the match that they will fight till the last moment. Later, the kangaroos got a chance in the World Cup.

In the first 80 minutes of the match in Al Rayyan in Qatar, neither team was able to score a goal. However, at the end of the allotted time, the fight started. In the last 10 minutes, Australia had three great chances to advance in the match. However, Ajdin Hrustic’s two shots were blocked by the Peruvian goalkeeper and Aziz Behich’s shot missed the target.

On the other hand, Peru’s only shot in the entire match came in extra time, but Aussie goalkeeper Mathew Ryan easily blocked Edison Flores’ long-range shot. Flores came closer to the goal towards the end of the match, but his header came back on the post.

In the end, the fate of the match was decided by a tiebreaker. And there Australia made its fortune.

Costa Rica in the CONCACAF region and New Zealand in the Oceania region will play in the play-offs at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan at night to get tickets to the World Cup as the last team.
