Bangladesh ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been named the new Test captain. The Bangladesh Cricket Board re-appointed Shakib following Mominul Haque's recent decision to step down from the post in order to concentrate on his batting. Liton Das has been named as his deputy.
The Tigers will play under his leadership in the upcoming tour of the West Indies. But Shakib is uncertain in the series against Zimbabwe, Nazmul Hasan Papon told the media on Thursday.
Shakib was absent from most of the Tests that Bangladesh has played in the last one and a half years. He has played in only 5 out of 13 Tests played by Bangladesh since 2021. Tiger all-rounder did not show personal reasons in the remaining 6 Tests.
However, this time Shakib has promised to play in all the matches of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). BCB president Nazmul Hasan Papon has said that he has doubts about his performance in the upcoming Zimbabwe series. Besides, the BCB president is optimistic about Shakib in all other series.
"We have a series against Zimbabwe after the West Indies. He may not be there. Other than this, he gave us a commitment he would play in all formats in future series, but it's difficult to say for how long Shakib will be leading the side," BCB president said.
Meanwhile, Mominul Haque announced his resignation from the captaincy on May 31. Muminul told the media after the meeting with the BCB president that day that he did not want to be the captain anymore.
After such news, there was a discussion about who will be the next Test captain of Bangladesh. Besides Shakib, Liton Das and Tamim Iqbal were also in contention to take the charge of Test captaincy.
