Former England captain Michael Atherton says it would be a mistake to imagine Ben Stokes as long term England Captain.

According to him, big responsibilities put people in danger. That's why Stokes can't be held to such a big responsibility in the long run. He has a lot to offer as a player.

Joe Root recently stepped down after a long five-year stint as captain. England have won just one of their last 17 Tests under Root. The English have also lost the last Ashes and the last Test series to West Indies. As a result, England is at the bottom of the points table of the World Test Championship.

Stokes has recently been appointed as England’s Test captain after Joe Root stepped down from the role earlier this month after the England Test team’s dismal run of late. The all-rounder has become the 81st Test captain of England and has the experience of captaining the limited-overs side in the past on a few occasions.

In an interview with The Times, Atherton said thinking Stokes as the long run term Test Captain is not the answer. Big responsibilities destroy even the toughest people, there are examples of that. There is no need to do that in the case of Stokes.

As a reason to keep Stokes short, Atherton said he still has a lot to offer as a player.

He said it would be wrong to think of Stokes as a captain in the long run. Let him be given this responsibility for a short time. So that he can destroy himself. Hopefully, he will be able to change the attitude and approach of everyone in the team. Then he will move. Because as a player he has more to give.

A lot of experts have already felt that all-rounders have traditionally not had the best success when it comes to captaincy. Stokes has been one of the consistent performers for England alongside Joe Root and has already accumulated 5061 runs in 79 Tests at an average of 35.89. He has played some match-winning knocks for the side in crucial times, notably in the Headingley Test in Ashes 2019 where he single-handedly won the Test for his side with an unbeaten 135.

He will start his captaincy with a Test series against New Zealand at home next June. For the first time since Andrew Flintoff, England will play a Test under the leadership of an all-rounder.
