Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting and Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene have turned down offers to become the coach of the England Test team, said Rob Key, the newly elected Director of Cricket of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

There were reports in the British media after Rob Key took over that the ECB was interested in Ponting as England’s Test coach. As a result, Ricky Ponting was offered to coach England’s test team.

Rob Key is on the field looking for a successor to former coach Chris Silverwood. He has already contacted several people for the appointment of coaches. Among them was Ponting, however, he was not interested in coaching England. So, now the ECB is looking at former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene.

However, a report in the Daily Mail said that Jayawardene, like Ponting, had turned down the offer to coach the test team.

Ponting and Jayawardene are currently coaching their respective teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Jayawardene is coaching the Mumbai Indians and Ponting is the coach of the Delhi Capitals.

The ECB wants to appoint a coach for the England Test team soon. Former Bangladesh bowling coach Ottis Gibson of the West Indies is currently at the top of the ECB’s list of favorites.

Gibson has coached two major international teams - West Indies and South Africa. Until last January, Gibson took care of the Bangladesh fast bowlers for two years.

Importantly, Gibson served as England’s pace bowling coach for two terms, from 2007 to 2010 and from 2015 to 2017. In the second term, Gibson formed a strong relationship with a number of senior England players. Gibson, 53, recently signed a three-year deal with Yorkshire.
