India have the upper hand at the end of the final session of the fourth day of the first Test at Green Park, Kanpur on Sunday.

New Zealand will need 280 runs on the final day with 9 wickets in the hut. India declared their second innings at 234/7, leading by 283 runs, in the third session

Resuming at the overnight score of 14/1, India lost four wickets for the addition of 70 runs in the morning session. Shreyas Iyer (65) scored a crucial fifty before being dismissed by Tim Southee (3/48) at the stroke of tea. Wriddhiman Saha (61 not out) and Axar Patel (28 not out) steered India to the safer waters. Earlier, India had grabbed a 49-run first-innings lead after Axar Patel registered figures of 5/62. In reply to India’s total of 345, New Zealand were all out for 269.
