Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam today said the work of the capital’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project will be “halted for the time being due to lack of security”.

DNCC Mayor said this while visiting the accident site – where flyover’s girder fell on a private car from a crane, killing 5 people including a child yesterday, Monday (August 15) – on Jasimuddin Road in Uttara in the capital on Tuesday (August 16).

DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam said there is no “minimum safety system” in the BRT project. As a result, accidents took place very often. Public suffering is increasing.

“Development work cannot be allowed to continue like this. The safety of the citizens must be ensured first,” he also said.

DNCC Mayor said that many projects including BRT and Metrorail are going on in Dhaka. “All the project managers have been summoned to the Nagar Bhaban next Thursday,” he informed.

Mayor Atiqul Islam added that they can start the BRT project “only if they confirm the safety issues”.
