Commander Khandaker Al Moin, legal and media wing director of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), today said that “the arrestee Rezaul Karim had been carrying a sharp weapon in his bag for several days to kill his doctor wife”. They went to a residential hotel in Panthpath on August 10 to celebrate Jannatul Naeem’s birthday on August 12. At one stage of arguing, fracas and brawling, he stabbed Jannat with a sharp knife and throat-slit to confirm her death. After taking a bath and closing the door from outside, Rezaul went to Chattogram.

He added that Rezaul met Jannat on Facebook in 2019 and was involved in an affair. Rezaul Karim and doctor Jannatul Naeem Siddiqui got married in October 2020 without the consent of both families. “As they got married secretly, they used to stay in different residential hotels at different times under the identity of husband and wife,” Khandaker Al Moin said, citing the information given by the arrestee Reza about the relationship with the deceased woman, the details of the love affair and the murder.

However, due to husband Rezaul’s illegal relationship with several women, altercations and quarrels increased. Rezaul planned to kill his wife by taking her to a convenient place to remove her as a “roadblock”, Khandaker Al Moin also said.

RAB Legal and Media Wing Director Commander Khandaker Al Moin said these things at a press conference organized at the RAB media center in the capital on Friday afternoon.

The RAB informed this after arresting the accused husband Rezaul Karim alias Reza from a hostel in Muradpur, Chattogram in connection with the recovery of the body of female doctor Jannatul Naeem Siddique.

Khandaker Al Moin said the female doctor’s throat-slit body was recovered from a residential hotel in Panthpath in the capital. “According to the investigation report, there were marks of injuries and bruises on various parts of Jannat’s body,” he informed.

The victim’s father filed a murder case with Kalabagan police station in the capital.

Later, RAB increased intelligence surveillance to bring those involved in the murder to justice. Last night, the accused Rezaul Karim Reza, 31, was arrested from the Chattogram Muradpur area in a joint operation of the RAB headquarters intelligence wing, RAB-2 and RAB-7.

During the arrest, blood-stained clothes during the murder, mobile, bag and mobile used by Jannat were recovered. In an initial interrogation, Reza admitted his involvement in the murder.

The interrogation revealed that the arrestee Rezaul completed BBA and MBA from a private university in Dhaka. During his MBA, he served as an administrative officer at the same university. Meanwhile, he was working in a private bank. Later, in June 2022, he joined a private company as a senior executive.

The interrogation also revealed that Raza had “affairs” with several women while still married. When his wife came to know about it, altercations and violence started. Jannatul Naeem tried to resolve the issue through counseling and dialogue with husband Reza to keep the marital relationship normal, however, failed.

On August 10, Rezaul Karim took her wife Jannatul to a residential hotel called Family Apartments in Panthpath to celebrate her birthday. During the stay there, there were arguments, altercations and fights about Reza’s relationships with different women.

At that time, Reza took out a sharp knife from his bag and cut the victim’s body in various places and confirmed her death.

In the interrogation, Reza also said that after leaving the hotel, he first went to his home in Malibagh. After leaving the house with the essentials, he went to a hospital, sewed up the wound on his own hand and received first aid. Later, he went to Chattogram by bus from the Arambagh bus stand and hid in Muradpur. He also contacted a lawyer to figure out how to get away with the murder.

Accused Reza was already arrested in RAB’s operation. Legal action is pending against him.
