Bangladesh today received the first consignment of machinery products for the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Railway Bridge construction project.
The South Korean flagship 'MV Uhian Hope' anchored at the Mongla port's jetty number seven with these goods at around 4 pm on Saturday. At that time, the relevant representatives of the ship along with senior officials of the port were present.
Mongla Port Authority Harbor Master Commander Sheikh Fakhar Uddin said the first consignment of machinery products for the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Railway Bridge structure arrived at Mongla Port. The foreign ship that brought this product left Haiphong port in Vietnam on July 25. A total of 2350 metric tons of machinery products in 267 packages arrived in the first shipment. A company called IHI Infrastructure Asia Limited has manufactured these products.
Local shipping agent Hawk and Sons' Khulna manager Shaukat Ali said these products coming from Vietnam will be released by August 9. Then they will reach the under-construction Bangabandhu Railway Bridge on the banks of Yamuna River in Sirajganj via Padma Bridge.
Mongla Port Authority Chairman Rear Admiral Mohammad Musa said that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Railway Bridge is one of the mega projects in the country. The implementation of the bridge is now visible. The first shipment of machinery products of this bridge was imported to Mongla port, which proves the capacity of the port. Apart from this, the capacity of the Mongla port is being utilized more with the launch of the Padma Bridge. In the next two years, this port will reach international standards. Along with that, it will be able to play a direct role in the economy as an alternative to Chattogram port.
The country's largest railway bridge is being constructed 300 meters upstream of the Bangabandhu Railway Bridge over the Jamuna River. This 4.8 km dual gauge double truck bridge will be built on a total of 50 pillars.
