Bus fares are likely to be hiked to adjust the fuel price hikes and public transport costs. In this, the bus fare may increase by a maximum of 29 paisa per kilometer and 42 paisa per kilometer in launches.
The Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources gave its initial thought of increasing the transport fares in a press release on Saturday.
It has been informed that the fare of each passenger on a long-distance bus (52 seats) at present is Tk 1.80 per kilometer. As the diesel price increased by Tk 34 per liter, this fare will increase by 29 paise and will be around Tk 2.9. In this, the fare is increasing by 16.22 percent per kilometer.
The press release also informed that the bus fare in the city area (52 seats) at present is Tk 2.15 per kilometer for each passenger. This fare will increase by 29 paisa and will be Tk 2.44. The fare is increasing by 13.16 percent per kilometer.
Besides, the current fare for each passenger is Tk 2.19 per kilometer in launches. Increasing by 42 paisa, this fare will be Tk 2.61. As per that the fare is increasing by 19.18 percent per kilometer.
According to the sources of the Road Transport Owners Association, it is proposed to charge “Tk 3.5 per kilometer for diesel buses” in Dhaka. This proposal will be discussed in the meeting.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Road Transport Owners Association has applied to Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) to increase the fare. BRTA’s fare revision committee will meet to adjust the transport fare. In view of the decision in the meeting, the fare may be increased in coordination with the price of fuel oil.
