Former president of Kushtia district Chhatra League named Gazi Anis tried to commit suicide by setting himself on fire at the National Press Club premises following frustration over the embezzlement of Tk 1.26 crore by Hanolax Company.

The incident took place at the Badminton Ground of the National Press Club on Monday afternoon. Later people came forward and put out the fire and informed the police. Upon receiving the news, police rushed to the spot and quickly rescued Gazi Anis and took him to the Sheikh Hasina National Burn Institute.

Eyewitness journalist Ismail Hossain Titu said, "Suddenly I saw a fire burning on a person." As soon as I shouted, people came who were there and put out the fire. Later the police got the news and took him to the hospital.

According to sources, a company named Henolux Group owed over Tk1 core to Anis. He came to the Press Club to hold a press conference to address the matter. Later, he set himself on fire at the badminton playground of the Press Club around 5pm.

Kazi Anis's brother Kazi Nazrul Islam said, "I heard a while ago that Anis tried to commit suicide." 

Asked if he would get Tk 1.26 crore to Hanolax, he said, "Yes, my brother will get money. It is true. Anis has been trying to get this money for a long time. But he failed".

Shahbagh Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Golam Hossain said, "Initially, I came to know that the name of the suicide attempt was Kazi Anis. He is from Kumar Khali area of ​​Kushtia district. He got Tk 1 crore 26 lakh to Hanolax company. After not getting this money for a long time he tried to commit suicide following frustration.
