The much-anticipated Padma Bridge is set to be inaugurated today. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina already joined the inaugural ceremony at Mawa point in Munshiganj at 10 am. She is expected to inaugurate the bridge after 11 am. However, the 6.15 km long Padma Bridge will be opened for vehicular movements at 6am on Sunday.

According to the authorities, it takes only seven minutes to cross the Padma River through the Padma Bridge. The two-story bridge also has a railway system. However, the work on the rail connection has not been completed yet.

The bridge that was planned almost two decades ago is seeing the light of day today.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said in a press conference on June 22 that the construction cost of the Padma Bridge has been estimated at Tk 30,193.39 crore. The bridge has been built with our own money.

Economists say the Padma Bridge will play a big role in the economic development of the south-west districts of the country. In these districts, various economic activities have already started around the bridge.

Monir Hossain, a resident of Shariatpur, said, “Dhaka is only 100 kilometers away from us. But even if someone was sick, we could not travel in the evening. The ferry would have stopped if it had rained a little. I have crossed the river by launch many times with the risk of my life. Today those sufferings is going to be the end.
