We did not see any catastrophe in Cumilla City Corporation (COCC) elections, said Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal today.
He said this while exchanging views with journalists about the COCC polls on Monday.
In response to a query whether the chaos during the announcement of the results of the Cumilla polls made the election questionable, the CEC said, “We observed the election till 8 pm and did not see any catastrophe. We were watching the overall situation through CCTV.”
“But on a telephone call, the results changed - such a thing was being heard. The results changed at the last moment call - it is absolutely impossible. I made one or two phone calls myself. Our Returning Officer called me in a state of shock and said “he was is danger”. I could hear loud noises there. I thought he was being beaten,” CEC explained the matter to the newsmen.
He added that he then called DC, SP and they said they were looking into the matter immediately. “Then I called the returning officer and said there will be no problem. He later said police had arrived and people had been evacuated,” Kazi Habibul Awal also said.
The chaotic incident was only 15 minutes. By no means did it last longer than 20 minutes. He then casually announced the results, which we saw, the CEC informed.
“We have posted the results of the EVM or ballot results on the website. Such an incident did not happen,” CEC Kazi Habibul Awal said.
He said the issue of the procession during the result was due to the “emotional outburst of the people”. It is undesirable to us but desirable to them. They did it out of sheer excitement.
Election Commissioners (EC) Begum Rashida Sultana, Brigadier General (Retd.) Ahsan Habib Khan, Md. Alamgir, Humayun Kabir Khandaker were also present at the time.
