Biman Bangladesh Airlines has canceled all London-bound flights from Sylhet. The decision was made after floodwaters inundated the runway of MAG Osmani International Airport in Sylhet. The flights will be suspended until Wednesday.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) confirmed the matter on Saturday.

Hafiz Ahmed, director of Sylhet MAG Osmani Airport, said a flight was scheduled to depart from Dhaka to London via Sylhet at 8 am on Saturday. However, that was canceled. This includes Biman’s Dhaka-Sylhet-London flight on Sunday (June 19) and Wednesday (June 22). Those have also been canceled.

He said on Friday that measures were being taken to protect various equipment at the airport from floodwaters.

CAAB said the date of the suspended flights would be announced later.

“The decision regarding the next flight will be taken on June 21,” said Tahera Khandaker, general manager-public relations (GM-PR) of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.

Earlier on Friday (June 17) afternoon, the airport authorities announced the shut down of flights due to floodwaters near the runway at Sylhet Osmani International Airport.

Sylhet has been hit by terrible floods. Houses, hospitals and other institutions have already been submerged in the downpour and hillslopes were coming down from the upstream. As a result, hundreds of thousands of people have suffered. Besides, the communication system of Sylhet with Dhaka has also been disrupted due to the floods.
