The Bridges Division has decided to form a state-owned company to maintain the Padma Bridge and collect tolls as expected. Although initiatives have been taken to form new companies, they will not take responsibility for the maintenance and collection of tolls on the Padma Bridge.

The reason — South Korean company Korea Expressway Corporation (KEC) and China Major Bridge Engineering Company (MBEC), the contractor involved in the construction of the Padma Bridge, have been entrusted with the task for the next five years. They will get Tk 693 crore in 5 years.

Earlier, the government had set up a “Jamuna Bridge Implementation Authority” during the construction of the Bangabandhu Bridge on the Jamuna River. Later, it was established as the Bangladesh Bridge Authority. Similarly, steps have been taken to form new companies for 100 years for Padma Bridge.

At present, the total manpower for the Padma Bridge project is 95 people except for the staff and consultants of the contracting company. Of these, 32 are in senior positions including project director. They come from various government divisions including the Ministry of Public Administration. When the project is completed, they will return to their respective departments. Besides, it will be time for some to retire.
