In the second phase, the Election Commission (EC) started the task of updating the voter list in 140 Upazilas in the country on Monday (June 13).

According to EC sources, at this phase, EC will go door-to-door to collect information in the Uttara, Motijheel and Ramna areas of the capital. It will continue till next October.

Earlier, on May 20, the EC started updating the voter list. In the first phase, enumerators of the EC went door-to-door for three weeks to collect information on prospective voters in 140 Upazilas. The task will be completed in four phases till November 20, EC officials said.

This time representatives of EC would collect data on citizens who were born on or after January 1, 2005, and they would gradually be included in the electoral roll when they turn 18.

Citizens who will be announced voters in March next year will be able to cast their votes in the next general election to be held late next year or early 2024.

Bangladesh currently has over 11.32 crore voters.

During the door-to-door campaign, enumerators will also collect data of dead voters to deduct them from the voter list.

Enumerators will give prospective voters the dates for visiting nearby registration centres to have their photographs and fingerprints taken for the voter list.
