Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has fined Tk 7.75 crore to four mobile network service companies for engaging in illegal VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) activities.

The telecom regulator has issued separate letters to the telecom operators to this end on June 7, BTRC sources said.

Of the telecom operators, BTRC fined highest Tk 5 crore to the state-owned mobile phone operator Teletalk, second highest Tk 2 crore to second largest telecom operator Robi, Tk 50 lakh to the leasing mobile phone operator Grameenphone and Tk 15 lakh to Banglalink.

Initially, the four mobile phone companies were fined Tk 26.62 crore in total. Of them, the commission fined Tk 17.74 crore to the state-owned Teletalk and the amount was Tk 7.55 crore to Robi, Tk 99 lakh to Grameenphone and Tk 33.62 to Banglalink.

The amount, however, was reduced based on applications of the mobile phone operators to reconsider the regulatory decision on penalty.
