Cyclone “Asani” is “gradually weakening”. However, there are indications that the storm may hit the coast of Bangladesh at the “last moment”. As a low, it may cross the coast between Barishal and Chattogram on May 14. Due to this, heavy rains may occur over the country and tidal waves are likely, said the meteorologists.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), meanwhile, said the Cyclone Asani would eventually turn into a “general cyclone” or a “deep depression”.

Besides, within 64 kms at the center of the strong cyclone, the maximum continuous wind speed is 89 kmph — which is extending to 117 kms in the form of gusts or gusty winds. As a result, moderate to heavy rains are likely in Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions from Tuesday morning.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecasted that the strong cyclone could weaken and turn into a normal cyclone by Tuesday. Rains have already started in Bangladesh due to the effect of ‘Asani’. The rain may continue till May 14, meteorologists forecast.

Meteorologist Md. Bazlur Rashid said the cyclone “may turn towards” Bangladesh, however, it will become weak in the sea and take the form of depression. Besides, it will not have any power to harm Bangladesh. In fact, the cyclone will lose all its power after hitting Bangladesh.

Rain will occur in Bangladesh in the next few days due to the impact of Cyclone Asani. The weather will continue to be “fairly good” from May 14, he added.

Meanwhile, warnings for the river port said that there could be temporary rains or thundershowers with gusty or squally winds of up to 60-80 kmph from Southeast or East over Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Cumilla and Chattogram regions.

Besides, the seaports of these areas have been asked to hoist distant warning signal no. 2

The weather forecast for the next 24 hours said light to moderate rain or thundershowers with lightning flashes and temporary gusty or squally wind is likely to occur at most places over Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and at many places over Rangpur division with moderately heavy to very heavy falls at places over Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions.
