101 university students commit suicide last year

Last year, 101 students of different universities in the country committed suicide. A survey revealed a number of reasons behind suicide, including family problems, depression, relationship complications and financial problems.

The survey was conducted by the social and voluntary organization "Aanchal Foundation". 

Out of 101 students, 72 were public university students. Twelve students of medical colleges and universities, four students of engineering universities and 23 students of private universities have committed suicide. Among them, 65 were male and 36 were female students. 

Aanchal Foundation has been working since 2019 to create mental health awareness among students of different universities of the country. They have got information about suicide verifying the information of more than 50 national and local newspapers. 

The survey said that last year, a maximum of nine students from Dhaka University, six from Jagannath University, five from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology and four from Rajshahi University have committed suicide. Among the private universities, three students were from Daffodil University.

A review of age-based data showed that 80 students, who committed suicide, were aged between 22-25, 26 between 18-21, 10 between 28-29 and 4 aged above 29. Most of them were third and fourth-year students. 

The study found that 24.75 percent of students committed suicide because of relationship problems,  19.80 percent due to family problems while 15.84 percent of students have chosen the path of suicide to get rid of mental anguish.

Besides, 10.89 percent of students have committed suicide due to study-related reasons, 4.95 percent for financial problems, 1.98 percent due to drug addiction and 21.8 percent due to other reasons.

The Aanchal Foundation held a press conference on Saturday with the survey titled 'Suicide has increased in universities; Students Depressed'. Professor of Dhaka University's Clinical Psychology Department Dr Kamal Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, Associate Professor at the National Institute of Mental Health Dr Helal Uddin Ahmed, Professor of Dhaka University's Persian Language and Literature Department Dr KM Saiful Islam Khan, actress Urmila Sravanti Kar and Anchal Foundation founder Tansen Rose were speaking at the press conference.
