Bangladesh ranks 3rd in world in onion production

Bangladesh has improved in the list of onion production. The country has improved by seven steps and ranked 3rd. Last year, Bangladesh ranked 10th in the world for onion production. 

The scientists of the Regional Spice Research Center of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) informed this on Wednesday.

It is learned that the demand for onion in the country is 35-36 lakh metric tons every year. Last year, 32 lakh metric tons of onion were produced. In the last one year, onion production in the country has increased by about 8 lakh metric tons.

Scientists say if new varieties are cultivated in the right way, Bangladesh will soon become “self-sufficient in onion production”.

On the day, BARI director general Dr. Debashish Sarkar inaugurated the program of the production of BARI Onion-5. 

BARI director (Services and Supplies) Dr. Md. Kamrul Hasan, director (research) Dr. Md. Tariqul Islam was present at the event as the special guest, presided over by Dr. Haridas Chandra Mohant, Chief Scientific Officer of the Regional Spice Research Center of BARI in Gazipur.

Dr. Shailendra Nath Majumder, Chief Scientific Officer and Project Director of the Spice Research Center of BARI, Scientific Officer Nivedita Nath and others spoke on the occasion.

Scientists also said that BARI-5 Onion is a high-yielding variety suitable for year-round cultivation. The national average yield of onion in the country is 10.56 tons per hectare but BARI-5 Onion yields 16-22 tons per hectare.
