State Minister for Culture KM Khalid said that the book fair has been postponed for 15 days due to increased coronavirus infection.
He told the reporters after a meeting at the secretariat on Sunday afternoon.
He said that Bangla Academy is fully prepared for 'Amar Ekushey Book Fair'. If the COVID infection situation was normal in the country, the book fair could have been started from February 1. But the book fair has been postponed for two weeks due to the deteriorating COVID infection situation. Then a new decision will be made about the fair.
Earlier, at around 1pm, member secretary of the book fair organizing committee Jalal Ahmed said, 'We have not yet reached a formal decision.' However, I have heard about the postponement of the book fair. I have heard that this decision has been taken in a meeting of the Ministry of Culture.
The Bangla Academy has been preparing for the book fair since February 1 amid fears over the COVID situation. Publishers think that in the current situation, the month of February is the right time for the fair. Considering the number of COVID identifications and deaths in the country, it is still under control. If the fair does not take place in February, then the COVID infection may increase and the fair may not be possible.
It may be mentioned that the Amar Ekushey Book Fair started a month and a half after the scheduled time in 2021 due to the epidemic. The fair started on March 18 that year. Besides, the book fair ended on April 12, two days before the scheduled time for the COVID situation.
