NCC polls tomorrow

Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) elections will be held tomorrow (Sunday, January 15). The candidates’ last-minute election campaign ended on Friday night.

EVM votings will be conducted in all the 192 polling stations. Voting starts at 8 am and will continue till 4 pm. The total number of voters in 27 wards is around 8 lakh.

Political analysts say Narayanganj is the “political center” after Dhaka. So the eyes of the political leaders of different parties are now on the NCC polls.

With this election looming, security has been beefed up at every polling station. Checkposts have been set up at various important points. RAB, police and law enforcement have been patrolling the city with a convoy of vehicles since Friday night. Interrogation is being done whenever a suspect is found.

Narayanganj Superintendent of Police said security has been strengthened in the city ahead of the NCC polls. Police checkpoints have been set up at key points to “prevent outsiders” from entering the city. “Polling stations that are considered riskier are also surrounded by three levels of security,” he added.

Mahfuza Akhter, Returning Officer of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) Election, said there are “no risky centers” in Narayanganj, all the centers are being considered with special consideration.

She said in each of the 192 polling stations, one SI would be headed by five policemen. Besides, eight male and four female Ansar members will be in charge of security.

In this one of the most important city corporations of the country, 7 candidates are contesting for the post of mayor. They are – Bangladesh Awami League nominee Dr. Selina Hayat Ivy (Boat), Khelafat Majlish candidate ABM Sirajul Mamun (wall clock), independent candidate BNP leader Taimur Alam Khandaker (elephant), Islami Andolan Bangladesh candidate Maulana Mohammad Mashum Billah (hand fan), Bangladesh Khilafat Andolan candidate Mohammad Jasim Uddin (Banyan tree), Bangladesh Kallyan Party candidate Mohammad Rashed Ferdous (watch) and independent candidate Kamrul Islam Babu (horse). 

Besides, 147 general councilors and 34 reserved women councilors are contesting in 27 general wards and 9 reserved women’s wards of the city corporation.
