Another 23 lakh doses of Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine have arrived in the country from the United States.

The consignment of the vaccine was landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in the capital at around 9:30 pm on Friday.

Shamsul Haque, Member Secretary of COVID Vaccine Management Committee of the Directorate General of Health Servies (DGHS), confirmed the information to the media.

He said another 23 lakh doses of Pfizer vaccine had arrived in Bangladesh under the platform COVAX, which was manufactured to ensure COVID vaccination on a fair basis worldwide.

The vaccine arrived on a special plane at 9:30 pm. Some officials of the DGHS have received the consignment of the vaccine, Shamsul Haque also said, adding that the vaccine was taken from the airport to the “Central IPI Warehouse” in Mohakhali.
“This vaccine will be given to students,” said Shamsul Haque.

The COVID vaccination campaign in the country started in February last year. In total, 23 crore doses of vaccine have arrived so far. Besides, 8,54,87,677 people got the first dose of vaccine while 5,61,58,790 people got the second dose. Till now, 5,72,863 people have taken booster doses.

According to the DGHS, Pfizer vaccine booster doses were introduced in the country in mid-December. However, due to temperature complications and vaccine crisis, it has been suggested to give Moderna vaccine instead of Pfizer.

The first and second doses will be given to the school and college-going students and the second dose will be given to those who got the first dose of Pfizer, the DGHS also said.
