Fireworks and lanterns will be banned at the Shakrain Festival on January 14. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is sharing this information with senior police officials.

According to the Bengali calendar, the Shakrain Festival is celebrated on the last day of the month of Poush. The festival is celebrated mainly in different parts of Old Dhaka by flying kites, fireworks and lanterns.

About the ban, DMP Commissioner Moha. Shafiqul Islam said the DMP is taking action to impose a “ban” on Shakrain Festival. “We will talk to the leaders of different communities in Old Dhaka so that they do not celebrate like that.”

DMP Commissioner further said it is difficult for police to stop such activities. “We will sit down with the chiefs of Old Dhaka and talk about this, we are taking initiative to stop these,” he added.

Noted that this decision has been taken as there were many fire incidents in different places of Dhaka during the celebration of the 31st Night of the English New Year 2022 (December 31, 2021). Besides, the suffering of the city dwellers has also been taken into consideration in the monstrous sound of incessant fireworks.
