‘Without mask could result in fine or even jail term’

Health Minister Zahid Maleque has warned if anyone does not wear a mask at work, he or she may be fined or even jailed by a mobile court.
He said this while distributing ambulance and computer equipment at the premises of the Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons (BCPS) in the capital on Wednesday afternoon.
Speaking as the chief guest, Zahid Maleque said the government has given 11-point directives to tackle COVID. Implementation of these will start from tomorrow – among these are to restrict and discourage religious, social and political gatherings. From Thursday (January 13), all will have to wear a mask in every workplace including businesses, jobs, shops.
“If anyone does not wear a mask, they will be fined by the mobile court and they even can go to jail,” Zahid Maleque also said, adding that shops are also expected to close by 8 pm.
The Health Minister said those who travel on public transport also have to wear masks. There are directives that no one should get on public transport without a mask. Different types of tourism are being discouraged. It is very important for those to wear masks and maintain physical distance who go out for various activities.
The Health Minister said the number of patients in the hospital would increase if the COVID cases increased. There will be extra pressure on hospital doctors and nurses. It will be difficult to get a hospital bed. The COVID death rate will also increase.
Lokman Hossain Mia, Senior Secretary of Health Services Division, Prof. Dr. ABM Khurshid Alam, Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) were also present on the occasion.
