6,284 killed in 5,361 road accidents in 2021

At least 6,284 people were killed in 5,371 road accidents across the country in 2021. 7,468 more were injured across the country.
Of these, 2,214 people were killed in 2,078 motorcycle accidents. Which is 35.23 percent of the total deaths. In addition, 1,523 pedestrians were killed in accidents during the year, accounting for 24.23 percent of the total deaths.
The Road Safety Foundation made the announcement at a press conference titled 'Annual Report and Review of Road Accidents' at Sagar-Runi Auditorium f Dhaka Reporters' Unity's in the capital's Segunbagicha on Saturday.
According to the organization, the report is based on information from seven national dailies, five online news portals and electronic media.
According to the report, in 2021, 159 people were killed, 192 injured and 47 were missing in 76 water vessel accidents. 147 people were killed and 39 injured in 123 railway accidents.
Chairman of the Road Safety Foundation AI Mahbub Uddin Ahmed addressed in his keynote at the press conference that the highest number of deaths in road accidents in the country in 2021 was due to motorcyclists, which accounted for 35.23 percent of the total deaths.
Three-wheeler passengers accounted for 934 deaths, accounting for 14.86 percent of the total deaths, truck-pickup-covered van passengers 456 or 7.27 per cent, bus passengers 389 or 6.19 per cent, microbus-private car-ambulance passengers 276 or 4.39 percent, 359 passengers or 5.71 percent passengers of locally made vehicles like Nasimon-Bhatvati and 132 persons cyclists were killed, which is 2.10 percent of the total deaths.
Out of the total 5,371 accidents, 2,014 were on national highways, 1,670 on regional roads, 954 on rural roads, 665 on city roads and 68 on other places.
According to the department-based statistics, 1,545 people were killed in 1,344 accidents in Dhaka division last year. In the capital alone, 137 people were killed in 131 road accidents.
Dr. AI Mahbub Uddin Ahmed said that compared to 2019, the number of accidents in 2020 has increased by 0.69 percent, the death toll has increased by 4.22 percent and the number of injured has increased by 3.88 percent. Compared to 2020, the number of accidents has increased by 13.43 percent, death toll by 15.70 percent and injuries by 1.20 percent in 2021.
He said 5,192 working people aged 18-65 were killed in road accidents in 2021, accounting for 82.62 per cent of the total deaths. The financial value of the amount of human resources lost in road accidents during the year is Tk 9,631 crore.
