Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda has blamed candidates and supporters for the violence in the Union Parishad (UP) elections.

“The Election Commission was not responsible for the violence. Violence has taken place due to conflicts among candidates, not for election management. Candidates and their supporters are responsible for the violence,” he said.

CEC KM Nurul Huda made the remarks in response to a query from reporters after a workshop at Sonargaon Hotel in the capital on Thursday afternoon.

At the time, the CEC termed the statement made by EC Commissioner Mahbub Talukder as “false” and “slander”.

“Mahbub Talukder has lied. He gave a purposeful speech. Maybe he has his own agenda, he said such things to implement it,” he said.

“There is a war for votes, but no votes” — in response to Mahbub Talukder’s such a statement, KM Nurul Huda said, “So where does 75 percent of the voters come from? Television sees – men and women lined up in a long quo to cast their votes. If not, then who are they? Aren’t they voters? So his (Mahbub Talukder) words have no consistency,” he added.

Earlier, the Election Commission (EC) Secretary Md. Humayun Kabir Khandaker said the election was good except for a few isolated incidents. It will be better in the future.
