Bangladesh has sent greetings and congratulations to Myanmar on its Independence Day. At the same time, Dhaka called Naypyidaw for speedy repatriation of Rohingya.

The call was made in a message sent by the Foreign Ministry of Bangladesh on the occasion of Myanmar's Independence Day on Tuesday.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs twitted, "On the occasion of Independence Day of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, the people of Bangladesh express greetings and felicitations to the people of Myanmar and wish them peace and prosperity. As an immediate and friendly neighbor, the people of Bangladesh have been persistent in developing mutually beneficial relations with the people of Myanmar and will work together to further the relationship including ensuring early, voluntary, safe, and sustained repatriation of the Myanmar nationals temporarily sheltered in Bangladesh."

In August 2017, the Myanmar military forced more than 7 lakh Rohingyas to fly and take shelter in Bangladesh to save their lives. Even before this, about 4 lakh Rohingyas were fleeing from Myanmar and staying in Bangladesh. Now the number of Rohingyas who have taken shelter in Bangladesh, old and new, is about 11 lakh.

From the very beginning, Bangladesh's goal was to repatriate the Rohingya as soon as possible. To this end, Bangladesh signed an agreement with Myanmar on Rohingya repatriation in November 2017. So far, however, not a single Rohingya has been repatriated to Myanmar.
