Abbas Ali, Mayor of Katakhali Municipality under Paba Upazila in Rajshahi had planned to flee abroad, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) official said on Wednesday.
A team of RAB arrested the mayor from Hotel Razmoni Ishakha in Dhaka early this morning following his remarks about a mural of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman that drew much criticism.
After his arrest, RAB's Legal and Media wing director Khandaker Al Moin briefed reporters on the spot.
Abbas has been hiding at different hotels in Dhaka without carrying any digital devices, the RAB official said, adding that no mobile phone was found with him during the drive.
He also said that a passport was found with Abbas who said he had planned to leave the country. Abbas admitted in primary interrogation that he made the remark which spread on social media, Al Moin added.
On November 21, an audio clip of Abbas went viral on social media, where he criticized the installation of a mural of Bangabandhu at the Rajshahi City Gate. His remarks drew widespread criticism and induced protests on the streets of Rajshahi city, Paba and Katakhali.
Later on November 24, the Paba Upazila unit of the Awami League removed Abbas Ali from the post of convener of the party's Katakhali municipality unit.
