Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque said some 240 people, who returned to Bangladesh from South Africa recently, could not be traced.

The minister came up with the development while speaking at a function at the secretariat on Tuesday afternoon.

Zahid Maleque said new corona variant Omicron has been detected in South Africa which is more dangerous than the Delta variant. The government is on high alert to prevent this new type of Covid-19 infection. But sadly, some 240 people have returned from South Africa, but after entering the country they could not be traced anymore as they kept their mobile phones switched off," the minister said after an inter-ministerial meeting over Omicron today.

He said people from the African continent were being discouraged to return. If anyone comes then he/she will have to quarantine for14 days. I will tell the authorities that those who come from abroad should be monitored.

Zahid Maleque said that strict restrictions will be imposed on the border. Letters will be given to all districts. All kinds of socio-political events need to be limited to prevent infection.
