Finally, the public transport owners have agreed to reduce bus fares by half for students. The half pass will be effective from Wednesday (December 1).

General secretary of Dhaka Road Transport Owners' Association Khandaker Enayet Ullah made the announcement in a briefing on Tuesday.

He said that students will get the benefit of discounted bus fares while travelling between 7:00 am and 8:00 pm. However, the discount will not be applicable on holidays. Students will have to show ID cards of their schools/colleges while paying half fare.

Earlier on Friday, the government decided to reduce fares by half for students travelling on state-owned BRTC buses in the face of student demonstrations.

Over the last couple of weeks, students have been demonstrating on the streets demanding a 50 percent discount on public transport. On November 23, they gave a 48-hour ultimatum to the government to meet their demand.
