An SSC examination candidate was killed as a bus ran over him in the capital’s Rampura area on Monday night. Over the death, a mob blocked the road and set fire to a number of buses.
The incident took place at around 10:45 pm in the Rampura Bazar area near Better Life Hospital.
The deceased was identified as Md Mainuddin, 19, a candidate in the ongoing SSC exams and student of Ekramunnesa School and College.
According to witness, the student got off a bus at Rampura Bazar area when a speeding Green Anabil hit him from behind. As he fell on the ground, the bus went over him.
Soon after the incident, several hundred of Mainuddin's neighbours from East Rampura rushed to the spot and blocked the road. Many locals and pedestrians joined them.
The protestors then vandalised at least 10 buses and set at least nine of them on fire.
Rampura police officer-in-charge (OC) Rafiqul Islam said a student was killed in front of Rampura Bazar in a bus accident, followed by a mob blocking the road and setting fire to a number of buses in the area.
Police are trying to find out how the accident occurred, he said.
Accrding to the Fire Service and Civil Defence department, two units of the fire service were sent to the spot after receiving information at around 11:08 pm. Later, more units joined the operation as several buses were set on fire.
