Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque has said that Bangladesh will suspend air travels with South Africa to prevent the spread of the recently-discovered coronavirus's new variant Omicron.

He said this in an audio message to the media on Saturday afternoon.

"We are aware of the South African variant, he said. This variant is very aggressive. That is why communication with South Africa is being suspended. The screening process has been further strengthened at all airports and land ports. This directive has been given to the concerned authorities from the Ministry of Health. Hygiene rules and wearing masks are also being beefed up across the country. Instructions have already been given at the district level.

The health minister also stressed on vaccinating those coming from other countries and taking the RTPCR test.
