A Dhaka court today ordered to send the Bikash Paribahan bus driver Md. Mahbubur Rahman to jail in a case filed over trying to molest a student on a moving bus in the capital.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Nurul Huda ordered to send him to prison on Saturday.

After the remand, the police produced him before the court. After that, Acsibuzzaman Asif, the investigating officer in charge of Azimpur Police Outpost requested to keep him in jail until the investigation of the case is over. Following the plea, the court ordered him to be sent to jail.

He was arrested by the Lalbagh police from the sand field of Turag police station in the capital on Wednesday. The court granted his one-day remand after the hearing on Thursday.

According to case sources, the victim girl boarded a Bikash Paribahan bus from Dhanmondi to Azimpur at around 8:40 pm on July 24. She got drowsy at one point while listening to music with headphones on the bus. Later that night at around 9:10 pm, the victim felt, someone, touched her body. Immediately she looked and saw that there was no passenger in the bus and the bus helper was sitting on the seat next to her. Then the student saw the danger and tried to push the bus helper from her side. When the victim tried to stand up from the seat, the helper grabbed her from behind with one hand. The girl ran from the helper with all her might to save herself and shouted to the driver to stop the bus. But the driver did not stop the bus and started speeding towards Azimpur in front of Eden College. At one point, when the bus slowed down near Azimpur Girls School, the victim jumped off the bus and defended herself.

The victim student shared the incident on her Facebook post. After that, Lalbagh Thana police conducted an initial search and identified the victim, and collected information from her. The Bikash Paribahan bus was identified with the help of instant CCTV footage review and modern technology. A case has been registered with the Lalbagh police station in the capital over the incident.
