A Dhaka tribunal today has set August 11 for the placing of arguments in a case filed under the Explosive Substance Act over the Ramna Batamul bomb blast.

Judge Rafiqul Islam of Dhaka’s Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 reset the date on Thursday.

Although today was scheduled to present the arguments, however, Mufti Abdul Hai, the accused in this case, was not produced in court. As a result, the court fixed August 11 as the next day for the presentation of arguments.

Earlier on April 3, the seven accused pleaded not guilty in court and sought justice. The other accused did not get a chance to defend themselves as they were fugitives.

The recording of depositions was concluded on March 21 after a total of 54 out of 64 prosecution witnesses testified in the case.

On April 14, 2001, as many as 10 people were killed in a bomb attack during the Chhayanaut program marking Bangla New Year. After the attack, the then Sub-Inspector (SI) of Ramna Police Station Kabir Hossain filed the case.

On November 29, 2008, CID Inspector Abu Hena Md Yusuf submitted two supplementary charge sheets against the banned militant outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami (HuJi) leader Mufti Abdul Hannan and 14 others in the court under the Murder and Explosives Substances Act.

A Dhaka court sentenced eight militants, including Mufti Hannan, to death and six others to life imprisonment in the murder case on June 23, 2014.

Those sentenced to death are – Mufti Abdul Hannan, Arif Hasan Sumon, Maulana Akbar Hossain, Maulana Tajuddin, Hafez Jahangir Alam Badal, Maulana Abu Bakar, Mufti Shafikur Rahman and Mufti Abdul Hai.

The six others are – Shahadat Ullah Jewel, Hafez Maulana Abu Taher, Maulana Abdur Rauf, Maulana Sabbir Hossain, Maulana Yahiya and Maulana Shawkat Osman alias Sheikh Farid.

Of the accused, Mufti Hannan was executed in 2017 in another case for the grenade attack on former British High Commissioner Anwar Chowdhury.
