SC discharges rule over arrest, remand of lawyers

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today discharged a rule issued by the High Court over the arrest and remand of two lawyers in a case lodged over attacking police in the capital's Jurain area.

A three-member apex court bench headed by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique passed the order, disposing of a leave to appeal petition filed by the state against the High Court order.

Supreme Court lawyer Syed Fazle Elahi filed a writ, challenging arrest and subsequently remand of two lawyers Yasin Arafat and Sohakul Islam over the Jurain incident.

After holding primary hearing on the writ, the High Court on June 9 issued the rule and sought case documents. The state side however, appealed against the order and the chamber judge court of the Appellate Division stayed the order and sent the matter to the regular bench for further hearing.

The Appellate Division on June 14 asked the state to file the leave to appeal petition.
