Trader Ujjal murder: 3 to die, 6 get life imprisonment

A local court today sentenced three people to death and six others to life imprisonment for killing trader Ujjal at Batihala village in Dhobaura of Mymensingh. The court also fined Tk 20,000 each.

Judge Monir Kamal of Dhaka's Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 passed the verdict on Tuesday. The court also acquitted the four people as the allegations were not substantiated. 

The death convicts are Nowshad, Shahabuddin and Sabuj while the life imprisonment convicts are Maram, Mahim, Karim, Jasim, Mia Hossain and Jalal Uddin. 

The acquitted accused are Islam, Emdadul, Kudrat Ali and Hashen Ali. Another accused in the case, Rashid, died during the trial.

According to case details, the accused were having a dispute with businessman Ujjwal Miah over the land. Ujjal Mia was returning from the annual Dolayatra Mela on a motorcycle on March 27, 2013, at around 9 pm. Nazar Ali and Kalam were with him. When they reached Batihala Ebtedayi Madrasa, the accused ambushed Ujjal leaving him seriously injured and breaking two legs. The accused fled when the people in the area came forward shouting at Ujjal. Ujjal was taken to Dhobaura Hospital and later to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Ujjalel's elder brother Kudrat Ali filed a murder case with Dhobaura police station.

CID sub-inspector Parimal Chandra Sarkar, the investigating officer in the case, filed a charge sheet against 14 people on February 5, 2014. 

On March 29, 2015, the court framed charges against the accused. During the trial of the case, 15 out of 28 witnesses testified.
