Haji Selim lands in jail

Dhaka-7 lawmaker Haji Mohammad Salim, who was sentenced to 10 years in a corruption case, has been landed in jail this afternoon.

Judge Shahidul Islam of Dhaka's Special Judge's Court-6 passed the order on Sunday afternoon.

Haji Selim appeared before the court of Judge Shahidul Islam of Dhaka Special Judge's Court-7 at 3:05 pm on Sunday. Later, as usual, he was taken to the courtyard. The court passed the order after hearing the application at 3.20 pm.

The High Court on April 25 upheld Haji Selim's 10-year sentence in a case of illegal acquisition of assets. He was then ordered to surrender within 30 days. Haji Selim appealed to the court to surrender after 10:30 am today.

On October 24, 2007, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against Haji Selim at Lalbagh Police Station alleging illegal acquisition of assets. He was sentenced to 13 years in prison on April 28, 2007.

On October 25, 2009, Haji Selim appealed to the High Court against the judgment. Later, on January 2, 2011, the High Court repealed Haji Selim's sentence.

Later, the ACC appealed against the High Court verdict. Following the hearing of that appeal, the Appellate Division on January 12, 2015, quashed the judgment and again directed the High Court to hear the appeal of Haji Selim. The ACC took the initiative to hear the case in light of those instructions.
