A Dhaka court today has fixed May 24 by deferring the testimony against four people, including the ousted DIG Mizan, in a case of illegal acquisition of assets.

Judge Asad Md. Asifuzzaman of Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-6 fixed the new date on Monday as the witness was not present. So far, the testimony of 23 out of 33 witnesses in the case has been completed.

On that day, accused DIG Mizan and his nephew Mahmudul Hasan were produced in court. But as the witnesses did not appear, the court fixed May 24 for the next testimony. However, DIG Mizan’s wife Sohelia Anar Ratna and younger brother Mahbubur Rahman were not present in the court as they were absconding.

On October 20, 2020, the same court dismissed the pleas of acquittal of four persons, including DIG Mizanur Rahman, and framed charges against them.

After investigating allegations of illegal acquisition of assets, on June 24, 2019, ACC director Manjur Morshed filed a case against 4 people including DIG Mizan at the ACC’s integrated district office (Dhaka-1). In this case, the accused were accused of acquiring illegal assets worth Tk 3,28,68,000 and concealing information about assets worth Tk 3,07,05,000.

The case alleges that accused Mizanur Rahman allotted a 211-square-foot shop in the name of his nephew Mahmudul Hasan at Police Plaza Concord in Gulshan-1 for Tk 24,21,225. Besides, Mizanur Rahman himself became the nominee and deposited Tk 30 lakh in the name of his nephew Mahmudul Hasan in an FDR account in a bank on November 25, 2013. However, after the investigation of the ACC was started, the money was redeemed and the interest of Tk 38,88,057 was withdrawn.

According to the complaint, Mizanur Rahman paid Tk 1,77,96,350 to the construction company at different times by signing an agreement in 2011 to buy a 1776 sq ft commercial flat in Kakrail in the name of his wife Ratna Rahman. Later in 2016, the flat was registered in the name of his nephew Mahmudul Hasan.
