A Dhaka court on Thursday sent BNP leader Advocate Maqbool Hossain to jail denying his bail plea in a case filled for allegedly deterring police from doing duty during the recent student-trader clash in capital's New Market area.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ishrat Jahan scrapped the bail petition by defendant's lawyers and ordered to send him to jail.

Earlier, New Market Police Station Inspector Halder Arpit Thakur appealed to the court to send Maqbool Hossain to jail till the investigation is over.

The court passed the order in presence of Mokbul in dock.

On April 23, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mamunur Rashid placed Maqbool Hossain on a three-day remand.

Prior to that, he was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) from his Dhanmondi residence the same day.

He was taken to the DB headquarters in the capital's Minto Road for interrogation over new market clash on April 18. Later, he was handed over to the New Market Police Station.

Previously, on the night of Monday (April 18), a clash ensued between Dhaka College Students and New Market traders in the city's New Market area.
