The High Court today sentenced four of the six convicts to life imprisonment for raping a 20-year-old female worker in Palash upazila of Narsingdi. The other two have been acquitted by the high court.

The High Court bench of Justice Bhishmadev Chakraborty and Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman passed the verdict on Tuesday (April 26) after hearing the death reference and approval of the accused.

Lawyers Munsurul Haque Chowdhury, Lutfar Rahman Akand and Akhter Rasul appeared for the accused in the court while Deputy Attorney General Harun Rashid and Assistant Attorney General Zahid Ahmed Hiro represented the state.

Assistant Attorney General Zahid Ahmed Hero confirmed the verdict.

Judge Shamim Ahmed of the District Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal on August 25, 2016 sentenced six people to death for raping a 20-year-old woman worker in Palash Upazila of Narsingdi.

The convicted persons are- Ashikur Rahman of Bagpara area of ​​Palash upazila, Elias Mia, Md. Rumin, Md. Robin, Md. Ibrahim and Abdur Rahman.

Then the Death Reference (Document of Death Penalty) comes to the High Court. The accused appealed against the verdict. The verdict was handed down on Tuesday after a hearing.

Ibrahim and Abdur Rahman were acquitted in the verdict. The death sentences of the remaining four were commuted to life imprisonment.

On May 23, 2013, at noon, the victim was returning from Bagpara area of ​​Palash upazila to her mess in the same area after work. When he reached in front of the gate of Janata Jute Mill, the men forcibly took her to a secluded place nearby. Later, Ashikur, Elias, Rumin, Robin and others raped her in turn. The accused recorded the video of the rape. They detained her for half an hour after the rape. Later she was released following her request. 

The next day, the worker went to the factory and informed a female security guard about the incident. When she informed the senior officials of the factory, ASM Sadequl Islam, assistant manager of the administration department, filed a case with Palash police station under the Women and Child Abuse Prevention Act and Pornography Control Act.
