Muniya rape-murder: Mim’s bail rejected

A Dhaka court today has rejected the bail petition of accused Saifa Rahman Mim in a case filed for allegedly murdering a female college student named Mosarat Jahan Muniya, 21, in Gulshan after rape.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ataullah passed the order after a hearing on Thursday. Saifa Rahman Mim, ex-wife of Sharun Chowdhury, son of Whip Shamsul Haque Chowdhury.

Earlier, Saifa Rahman Mim was produced in court on Wednesday. The investigating officer of the case requested to keep her in jail till the investigation of the case is completed. At that time, her lawyer appealed for bail. The court then ordered to send her to jail by rejecting her bail plea. The judge also set a bail hearing on Thursday. 

Earlier on Tuesday (February 15), Saifa Rahman Mim was arrested from her Dhanmondi residence in the capital. She was later taken to the PBI’s Special Crime Office.

Noted that on the evening of April 26, 2021, police recovered the body of a college student named Mosarat Jahan Muniya from a flat in the capital’s Gulshan. With her mysterious death, a lawsuit was filed with Gulshan Police Station on September 7 on charges of murder after being raped as per the court order. The case was later handed over to the PBI.

Muniya’s elder sister Nusrat Jahan Taniya filed the case in the Dhaka Women and Child Abuse Repression Tribunal-8. 

District and Sessions Judge Begum Mafroza Parveen accepted the case and directed the PBI to investigate and submit a report. The court recorded Nusrat’s statement that day. 

Apart from Bashundhara MD Sayem Sobhan Anvir, the other accused in the case are – Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, Afroza Sobhan, Anvir’s wife Sabrina, Saifa Rahman Mim, model Faria Mahbub Piasha, Piasha’s friend Sharmin and her husband Ibrahim Ahmed Ripon.
