Abrar murder: HC to hear jail appeals of 17 convicts

The High Court today has accepted the jail appeals of 17 convicts sentenced to death in the murder case of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Abrar Fahad.

The High Court bench of Justice Md. Rezaul Haque and Justice Rajik Al Jalil passed the order on Wednesday. Deputy Attorney General Masud Rumi appeared for the state in the court.

Earlier, 17 of the 20 convicts sentenced to death in the murder case of BUET student Abrar Fahad filed a jail appeal.  
The Death Reference of the case arrived in the High Court on January 6.

According to the Criminal Procedure Code, if a person is sentenced to death in a judicial court, all the proceedings of the case have to be sent to the High Court for approval. Convicted convicts can file criminal appeals and jail appeals in the High Court.

Earlier on December 8, the court sentenced 20 people to death and five to life imprisonment in the murder case of BUET student Abrar Fahad. 

The court of Judge Abu Jafar Md. Kamruzzaman of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 handed over the verdict.

The 20 convicts given death sentence are – Chhatra League BUET unit’s then General Secretary Mehedi Hasan Russel, ex Organising Secretary Mehedi Hasan Robin alias Shanto, ex Information and Research Secretary Anik Sarkar Apu, ex Literature Secretary Moniruzzaman Monir, ex Sports Secretary Meftahul Islam Zion, ex Deputy Social Welfare Secretary Ifti Mosharraf Shokal, ex Deputy Office Secretary Mustaba Rafid; former members Mujahidur Rahman Mujahid, Muntasir Al Jemi and Ehtashamul Rabbi Tanim; activists Khandaker Tabakkarul Islam Tanvir, ASM Nazmus Sadat, Majedur Rahman alias Majed, Hossain Mohammad Toha, Shamim Billah, Mizanur Rahman Mizan, SM Mahmud Setu, Shamsul Arefin Rafat, Muhammad Morshed-Uz-Zaman Mondol alias Jishan and Morshed Amartya Islam.

Among these, Ehtashamul Rabbi Tanim, Muhammad Morshed-Uz-Zaman Mondol, and Mustaba Rafid are absconding. 

The 5 convicts given life term imprisonment are – BUET BCL’s former Vice-president Muhtasim Fuad, ex Library and Publication Secretary Ishtiaq Ahmed Munna, ex-Deputy Legal Affairs Secretary Amit Saha and activists Akash Hossain and Moaz Abu Hurayra.

BUET students and the varsity authorities found the seemingly lifeless body of Abrar, 22, on the first-floor stairs of Sher-e-Bangla Hall and rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared him dead at around 6.30 am on October 7, 2019.

He was brutally beaten to death by a couple of BUET students.

Abrar’s father filed the case with Chawkbazar Police Station against 19. Police later included names of six others in the list of accused, after founding their involvement in the gruesome murder, in the probe.
