Two acquitted from death sentence in child murder case

High Court has acquitted two convicts who had been sentenced to death for killing a rootless child in Shalban of Bhawal.

The High Court bench comprising of Justice Krishna Debnath and Justice KM Zahid Sarwar passed the verict on Thursday after hearing the death references and appeals of the accused.

Lawyers Shishir Monir, Nawab Ali and Asad Uddin were present in the court on behalf of the accused. On the other hand, Deputy Attorney General Shaheen Ahmed Khan represented the state.

Lawyer Shishir Monir said the court had acquitted the two. However, HC directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to take appropriate action against the police for not coming to testify.

On April 9, 2005, locals arrested Shonkor and Zakir with a bag under the Shajahanpur overbridge in Dhaka. A boy's head was found in their bag. Later a case was filed against them.

Md. In March 2016, Dhaka court sentenced Anwar Hossain alias Md. Rajib alias Golam Rabbani alias Shankar Chandra Debnath and Md. Zakir Hossain to death.

After that, the death reference and appeal hearing came up in the High Court for the approval of the death sentence as per the rules.
