Pori Moni’s drug case trial begins

A Dhaka court today has framed charges against three people, including popular film actress Pori Moni, in a case filed under the Narcotics Control Act with the Banani police station in the capital. With this, the formal trial of this case has started.

Judge Mohammad Nazrul Islam of Dhaka’s Special Judge’s Court-10 on Wednesday has framed the charges by rejecting the plea of the defendants’ acquittal.

Apart from Pori Moni, the other two accused in the case are – Ashraful Islam Dipu and Kabir Hossain.

On the day, the three accused including Pori Moni has appeared before the court.

Lawyers of the defendants then pleaded not guilty on behalf of the accused and appealed for acquittal. The state, on the other hand, held a hearing in favor of the chargesheet. 

After hearing both the parties, the court dismissed the plea of ​​acquittal and framed charges against the accused and ordered a trial. At the same time, the judge fixed February as the date for taking testimony.

Earlier on November 15, the court of  Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Imrul Kayes accepted the chargesheet in the case. The case was then transferred to Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-10. 

On October 4, the investigating officer of the case, CID inspector Kazi Mostafa Kamal, filed a chargesheet against the three, including Pori Moni. The case was sent to the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court on October 12 as the case was being prepared for trial. The next day, October 13, the court fixed a date to accept the chargesheet. 

According to the chargesheet of the case, there were no valid documents of drugs seized from the resident of Pori Moni. The CID has been informed in writing by the Department of Narcotics Control that in the fiscal year 2019-20, a license was given to “consume alcoholic beverages” in the name of Pori Moni. The license expired on June 30 last year. 

Pori Moni had collected illegal drugs from different places through two accused Ashraful Islam and Kabir Hossain and kept those at home. She could not give a satisfactory answer regarding drug possession. Pori Moni used her car to carry drugs.

On August 4, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Pori Moni from her home in Banani in the capital. New drugs LSD, alcohol and ice were recovered during the operation. A huge number of bottles of liquor were recovered from her drawing-room cover, showcase, dining room, bedroom side table and toilet. 

The next day, on August 5, RAB filed a case against Pori Moni and her accomplice Bipu under the Narcotics Control Act with Banani Police Station. In this case, Pori Moni was remanded for seven days in three phases. On August 31, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Imrul Kayes granted her bail.
