The three owners of the MV Abhijan-10 launch were asked to produce before the Marine court from jail in a case filed over negligence in duty in the fire that broke out in the Sugandha river in Jhalokathi.

Marine court judge Zainab Begum passed the verdict showing them arrest on Tuesday. The three convicts are- Hamjalal Sheikh (55), Md. Shamim Ahmed (43) and Md. Russell Ahmed (43).

Bellal Hossain, the prosecuting officer of the state's shipping department, confirmed the matter and said the accused had been arrested by the police and were lodged in jail under Section 54 of the Criminal Procedure Code. An application was made to show their arrest in a naval court case. 

Following the application, the court directed the Dhaka Central Jail authorities to produce the accused before the court on January 19.

Earlier, on December 26, Chief Inspector of the Naval Department Shafiqur Rahman filed the case against eight persons under Sections 57/66 and 70 of the Special Marine Act. The court took cognizance of the case and issued arrest warrants against the accused. 

The accused in the case are - the four owners of Messrs Al Araf & Company Hamjalal Sheikh, Md. Shamim Ahmed, Md. Russell Ahmed and Ferdous Hasan Rabbi, master Riaz Sikder, driver in charge Masum Billah, second master Khalilur Rahman and second driver Abul Kalam.

It is alleged in the case that MV Abhijan-10 left Sadarghat for Barguna on December 23 at around 7 pm with around 800 passengers onboard. The fire broke out in the engine room at around 3am after the launch crossed the Nalchiti police station area of ​​Jhalokahti. 

About 43 people died in the fire while over hundreds received burn injuries.
