At least 11 people have been killed and several others injured in an attack carried out by gunmen at a hotel in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato.

Witnesses said about 15 armed men entered the hotel around 10 pm local time on Monday (May 23) and fired shots and petrol bombs. The gunmen also attacked two nearby bars.

“Of the 11 people killed in the attack, eight were women and three were men,” the report said. Besides, several others were injured in the incident.

The Selaya city Security Secretariat said in a statement that authorities found the bodies of those killed when they arrived in the vicinity of the Valle Hermoso after receiving reports of a gun attack.

Witnesses said the victims were shot dead. After the killing, the assailants poured petrol to set the facility on fire.

They added that the bodies were scattered between plastic tables and chairs and one fell on the sidewalk.

Guanajuato is a rich industrial region in Mexico. There is a refinery and an important fuel pipeline. But the conflict between two groups, the Santa Rosa de Lima and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, has made it one of the most violent provinces in Mexico.

These criminal gangs are fighting each other for control over drug and fuel smuggling routes. However, the authorities did not say if any criminal group was suspected in the latest attack.
