Veteran Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was shot dead by Israeli troops Wednesday when she covered news about a raid on the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

Al Jazeera and the Palestinian health ministry confirmed the death of Abu Aqleh, 51, a prominent figure in the channel’s Arabic news service.

Shireen Abu Akleh was hit by a live bullet on Wednesday while covering Israeli raids in the city of Jenin and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. She was declared dead at the hospital, said the Palestinian health ministry and Al Jazeera journalists.

“The circumstances of her death were not clear, but videos of the incident show that Abu Akleh was shot in the head,” said Nida Ibrahim, ‍a journalist for Al Jazeera.

The Israeli army confirmed that it had conducted an operation early Wednesday in Jenin refugee camp, a stronghold of Palestinian armed groups in the northern West Bank.

It added that there was an exchange of fire between suspects and security forces and that it is investigating whether “journalists were wounded, possibly by Palestinian gunfire”.

Speaking through tears, Nida Ibrahim said Abu Akleh was a “very well respected journalist” who has been working with Al Jazeera since the beginning of the second Palestinian Intifada in 2000. “Abu Akleh was wearing a press vest when she was killed,” she added.

Tensions have risen in recent months as Israel has grappled with a wave of attacks that killed at least 18 people since March 22, including an Arab-Israeli police officer and two Ukrainians.

The Israeli army has blamed some of the attacks on residents of Jenin and has stepped up operations in the area in recent weeks.

A total of 30 Palestinians and three Israeli Arabs have died during the same period, according to an AFP tally, among them perpetrators of attacks and those killed by Israeli security forces in West Bank operations.
