Prominent Indian singer Geetashree Sandhya Mukherjee has rejected the Padma Shri award given by the Indian government.

In a report on Tuesday (January 25th), Indian media Anandabazar confirmed the news. According to the report, the famous singer has already informed the central government not to accept Padma Shri.

Earlier, former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya had denied the title of 'Padma Bhushan'. The Anandabazar newspaper quoted Buddhadeb Bhattacharya's wife on Tuesday night as saying that he had rejected the honor bestowed on him by the Indian government.

In a statement later, Buddhadeb said, 'I don't know anything about the Padma Bhushan award. No one told me anything about this. If I was given the Padma Bhushan award, I would reject it.'

There was a lot of discussion about whether the leftist chief minister of West Bengal, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, would accept the Padma Bhushan award given by the central BJP government. With the statement, he himself put an end to that speculation.

Every year on the Republic Day of India, the Central Government announces Padma Award. The most prominent awards in India are consecutively, Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. This time again the names of 128 people were in the list.

Sandhya, the proverbial artist of modern Bengali music, says, 'Does anyone give Padma Shri like this? Don't they know who I am! At the age of ninety, I have to take Padma Shri? And I will go justby getting a phone call? Artists don't have respect?'

Padma Shri ranks fourth among Padma-honors. Above it is Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and at the very top is Bharat Ratna.

The German media Deutsche Welle wrote, "Buddhadeb Bhattacharya was asked to give Padma Bhushan for his social work. He did not give a reason for his refusal. According to party sources, Buddhadeb is a staunch opponent of the BJP ideologically. He had sharply criticized the BJP even a few days back.

'Moreover, the CPM is against taking such awards. Earlier, the Manmohan Singh government wanted to give Bharat Ratna to Jyoti Basu. But he did not agree. The party didn't want it either.'

In response, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, 'Politics is clear in what has happened. The attempt to give Gitashree Sandhya Mukherjee a Padma Shri award is an insult to Bangla. Earlier, Rashid Khan of Bengal received the Padma Bhushan, he was called a man of Uttar Pradesh. There are many talented people in Bengal, Delhi don't remember them. But Bengal does not ask for mercy from anyone.'
